Restylane & Perlane

Why does our skin start to look bad as we age? There are many factors that contribute to the aging of the skin. However, the primary factor is the loss of our naturally occuring substance called hyaluronic acid. This is the substance that keeps our skin looking full, wrinkle free, elastic and yourthful.

The Restylane family of products includes Restylane, Restylane-L, Perlane, and Perlane-L. These products can be used individually to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Ask your healthcare professional which is right for you.

What is the difference between Restylane and Perlane? Restylane and Restylane-L® are indicated for mid-to-deep dermal implantation. Perlane® and Perlane-L® are indicated for implantation into the deep dermis to superficial subcutis.

Where can products in the Restylane family be used? The Restylane family can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds or laugh lines). The Restylane family can also be used in other moderate to severe facial wrinkles such as lipstick lines—the area just below the nose and above the upper lip; the corners of the mouth; and marionette lines—the area that extends downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline.

What can I expect to feel like after treatment? After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days.

How often should I be treated? Restylane injectable gel has been clinically proven to provide results that last up to 18 months, with only one follow-up treatment at either 4.5 or nine months. Your healthcare professional can work with you to help you establish your Restylane Regimen. Perlane injectable gel results may last up to six months after a single treatment.

When will I see results? The Restylane family of products instantly adds volume to help restore youthful contours, so you’ll see results immediately following your treatment.

How much Restylane injectable gel will I need for full correction? Due to the individual needs of each patient, it is important to discuss your full correction with your healthcare professional. However, in a clinical study where patients received full correction for their nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth) during initial treatment in the Restylane Regimen, the average volume was 2 to 3 mL per patient.

Are there any reasons why I should not be treated with a product from the Restylane family? Products in the Restylane family should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to certain microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with previous bad allergies to drugs who have required in-hospital treatment. These products should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Injections should not be made anywhere except the skin or just under the skin. Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by people with a known allergy to lidocaine. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years, you should not use products in the Restylane family.

In three clinical studies of 150 patients each, on average 70% of patients maintained improvement for six months after just one Perlane treatment.

What should I tell my healthcare professional before having a treatment with a product from the Restylane family? You should tell your healthcare professional if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores. He or she may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence. You should also tell him or her if you have recently used aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. What are some of the common side effects?
